Sad Palomino was formed in the summer of 2016. The lineup was initially Will King on guitar/vocals and Dick Darden (PAGiiNS, Dylan Earl, Jess Harp band) on drums. The pair played several hometown shows before Kris Mastin (The Chads, John Charles, Brothel Sprouts) was rounded up to play bass the following year. Before they knew it, the boys were sitting on their first record: a self-titled calvary of songs originally released at the end of 2017.

The music of Sad Pal clip-clops squarely down the line between loud indie-punk and easy going, dreamier pop. The lyrics span a herd of savory topics, from heartache to van breakdowns to the mundane rituals of a disillusioned youth at odds with the world and their wallets. The songwriting reflects a range of influences. Hats were tipped to 90's/2000's sounds of Silver Jews, Pavement, Wilco, Black Francis, and Dinosaur Jr.. Vocal stylings draw from Malkmus/Lou Reed at times and Neil Young/Thom Yorke at others. Artists like Neil, Nick Drake, and Sonic Youth inspired the use of open tunings, yielding rich, complex harmonic progressions corralled by a rock-solid rhythm section and group’s unbridled pop instinct. It’s a fun indie rock record with a lot going on under the hood. Horsepower joke?
